A Rose By Any Other Name by GoblinQueeen A Rose By Any Other Name by GoblinQueeen
Seems like a lot of the 80's is getting a re-birth lately. Child of the 80's that I am, gotta love that, but while Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Bright, My Little Pony, She-ra, and even Gem have started popping back up, one of my favorites I remember from kindergarten, Rose Petal Place has yet to turn back up.

Looking back now, it was probably the earliest exposure I had to anything that was more related to art nouveau or at least something like it. The basic story as I remember it was that there was a little girl who loved her garden, but had to move. When she left, she visited her garden one last time and her tears fell on the flowers, turning to magical crystals and bringing them to life. Ok, it wasn't Shakespeare, but I was what, 4? That's high drama for that age ;)

In any case, who knows, it may have had an influence on why I like art nouveau so much, maybe not, but felt like it was time it got a little tribute ;)

Media: lineart-colerase brown on dura-lene, painting done in Photoshop and Painter.

Rose Petal Place property of David Kirschner and Hallmark/American Greetings

I also saw the cartoon, so I can surely say you remembered the backstory right. I love the way you drew her...vintage-looking and very pretty. She's not the only 80s character that deserves a comeback. I'm still looking for Herself The Elf and the Hugga Bunch.

Hello! I'm making a series of art videos about flowers, and I was wondering if I could include this piece in one of my videos. It would be set to an original classical-style composition (by me) about this flower. I'll be sure to credit you and link to your page if you say yes. Here's a link to see the kind of music it is: [link]

That is so true, if they do revamp it i hope they don't modernize it too much. took me forever to get used to the new strawberry shortcake outfit.

I have always loved Rose Petal and have never forgotten her. And guess what? I grew up to be a (usually) pink-haired singer who loves gardening! I have also loved Mucha for forever. Finding your art made my day! I agree with the above poster, that this work is like the little cartoon that I love so much has grown up too!

Is there ANY way I can purchase this as a print or poster?

This is simply fabulous! *.* It captures the feeling of the original well. I also loved RPP a whole lot when I was young and still do. It makes me sad when I talk to people and they don't remember this sweet little cartoon...

I too remember the cartoon...and I loved it. I think Marie Osmond was perfect for the title role(must've been her song "Paper Roses" that sealed the deal). They should bring back more of this old school stuff to show to the new generation.

Recently found one of my old Rose-Petal Place books in a box and I was looking all over the internet for some more pictures. Anything. And I found this. Its just stunning. It's like the cartoon I loved when I was little grew up just like me. Wonderful take on an already wonderful character idea.

As a cosplayer, your art inspires me to make a costume. Let's see if I can get the time :P

Oh that's what it's called! I loved that show! Had all the dolls lol. It was so long ago and I hadn't heard all that much about it since that I had forgotten what it was called.

Another cartoon I miss, and one again I forget what it was called but there was one girl with rabbits (blond), one with birds (red head) and one with mice(brunette) their hair but the tails of the animals was like human hair but wild colors.
Ah the older cartoons, I miss them.

Your lines are clean and flowing, nicely done :)

Gotta agree with your points, art nouveau sings to me too and the people who I can find who remember this all remember it as kinda trippy. Not Shakespeare but if we all have recollections there was something to that writing.

Just looked it up on IMDB,
the guy who wrote this wrote other things I still remember too, wow.

Oh god! Thanks for refreshing my memory of this series, I remember this character, I just could never remember her name or what show she was from but I've watched this when I was five or six, and before I got out of highschool I remember seeing an awesome shirt of her at hot topic, but for some reason my mom didn't want me to buy it >>;I remember her rolling her eyes at me, telling me the shirts for little girls *wtf?!* It was hard as heck to explain to her about old school phases :(

I loved this show! I was 4 when I got Rose Petal in my Easter basket and I was ecstatic.

You did a great job with this. I did my own versions of the Rainbow Bright crew, but this is amazing.
