Batter up by GoblinQueeen Batter up by GoblinQueeen
***Edit 10/19/08***
Really nothing too major, just looking at this one again and changed the face and the leg a bit.

***Original Submission 11/3/05***
Ok, I know, a little late for baseball season, but this is one of the final pieces for the 2006 calendar. The uniform is based off of the old AAGPBL (All American Girls Professional Baseball League) uniforms. I don't know if there was ever a team with the colors of blue and yellow, but it seemed like a nice combination for that fresh spring feel. This will either be March or April, I haven't decided %100 yet.

The AAGPBL, despite the uniforms, was actually a pretty big step forward for women in the 20th century. They really stepped up the the plate as it were (no punn intended) and really pushed the envelope as much as Rosie the Riveter in a visible, iconographic way that people could really see.

A little trivia for you: if you look real closely there on her sleeve, the patch reads R-G GPBL, RG standing for Retro Girl ;)

Medium: original sketch vectored in Illustrator

I really need to. I think I did a sketch as a commission when I was at ComicCon a couple years back, but never did full color. About the closest right now would be [link] . As soon as I get through the projects on my plate right now, maybe in a couple months, I'll try to do something more along that vein.

Awesome work. This girl reminds me of Madonna's character in the movie League of our own. The story based on the the first women's baseball teams

I kinda wish there was a little more overlap with the background but that's probably not going to happen at this point.

At first I thought it was a picture based on that old short (I think it was a Disney one, but I'm not sure) where Casey Jones has 9 daughters and uses them to make a baseball team, but this is even cooler with its basis in real life and all that. Neato. =D

I love the AAGPBL :D, I did a project on it once. It was a great idea, but such a shame that it didn't catch on fully. A League of Their Own is one of my favorite movies :D

I like this one quite a lot, because of the old feel to it. Reminds me of that movie, League of Her Own. There's just so much character shown in all the places where it counts. She has this very loose, playful feel, one that is really pushed by her stance on the tippie toes. So I don't see her as much as a player, as I do a ballerina. So it's not the raw steroid-ridden power that is seen in modern baseball, but a particular grace that is consistent with all of your work.
