Blue As Can Be by GoblinQueeen Blue As Can Be by GoblinQueeen
No, it's not an April Fools trick, I really did finish another Retro Girl ;) Third in the color series (and my personal favorite color), the title actually came first on this one and then the image jumped into my head almost imediately after. Smokey lounge with a 1950's style cocktail dress.

For some reason, I had 'How Long Has This Been Going On' playing in my head the whole time I worked on it, though I don't know why since it's not really a sad song. It does have that somber, lilting feel. I think more likely the guy at the piano is playing 'They Can't Take That Away From Me' or 'Stormy Weather,' something more like that.

Medium: Original sketch vectored over in Illustrator (yup, that includes all those little lines, too. All vectored shapes) Brush texture/grain to the base of the bar done with a custom brush in Photoshop.

Other colors in the series so far:

Orange: [link]
Green: [link]
Purple: [link]
Silver: [link]

Great one! The blue makes it seem brooding and surreal - exactly like one of the smoky lounges or nightclubs from a film noir movie.

Well, the first thing is they aren't 'dolls' if you are referring to the traditional pixel type you find on the net ;) Not that there is any less work involed in some of those, just it's a different process and genre. The pieces in my retro series are all done from scratch starting with the sketch and then finished in Photoshop or Illustrator. Hope that makes sense :)

I think the piano man is playing Smoke Gets In Your Eyes...possibly because of that morphed shape in the background. It reminds me of smoke. =)
This one is gorgeous, it has such atmosphere!

one of my vintage cocktail dresses is quite similar - though sadly in quite a state of disrepair.

I love this pictures...it makes me strangely sad, but I love it nevertheless.

I don't know if I've commented on this yet, so I'm gonna.

First of all, I think the whole color thing is really cool. This one and "Some Like it Red" are my two favorites. I like this one the best, though, coz it reminds me of the "Rhapsody in Blue" segment of Fantasia 2000. Squee! Tres good. ;D

Oh, by the way, I was wondering if you ever thought of making a tutorial on how to color retro pictures. Your style has really inspired me, and I can draw the pictures fine, I just have no idea how to color them. o.o

lol, yeah, just took a little tweaking. First time I did the bar, I did the texturing the other way, but then realized if I was wanting to work in the impression of wood, the grain would be going up and down, not side to side, so I had to redo it. Not like anyone else would have probably noticed, but I would have ;)
