Artist's Comments

Not really the traditional holiday kind of image...I really did have plans for something a little more festive, gingerbread and everything....but then, I went to see Sweeney Todd Friday night, and well, I've been a fan of the show for years and just had to get this out of my system right away ;)

Now, as I generally ask with these kinds of things, I'll be posting some of my thoughts on the film in my journal and anyone who wants to add their own thoughts is more than welcome, but I'd like to avoid the comments here becoming a film debate. So if you'd like to talk about the art, fabulous, this is the place, if you want to talk about the film, head on over to my journal :)

For my own thoughts on this, my friend and I both agreed that By the Sea was the number that really had something added by being on film as opposed to the stage and there was such a wonderfully whistful melancholy...it became one of those numbers that was very poinent for this interpretation of Lovett...plus those outfits were fabulous ;)

In anycase, I wanted something sweet with a subtle macabre undertone to kindof go with that feeling and that's how this came out.

Incidentally, lately I've been using a lot of vellum, but this time, I tried out dura-lene instead and oh my goodness, if it's possible to be in love with a paper, I think I am. It takes the pencil so well and so richly, I highly recommend it.

Media: line art- brown col-erase on dura-lene and vellum, painting done in Painter and Photoshop. Scanned papyrus used for texture.

This version of Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney Todd property of Dreamworks and Warner Bros.

With the deepest possible respect, please do not take or otherwise use this artwork without express permission.
