Happy Mardi Gras 2009

Seriously, this has to be the best Mardi Gras ever for me, not that my bar is set all that high mind you, being no where near New Orleans or any other place with a real Mardi Gras celebration, all the same...

I know, it's not as detailed and riddled with little hidden tributes as last year's, but this one sits really close to my heart. One of the things that made this year so fabulous was the fact that finally got to go back to New Orleans for the first time since I was 13 and actually have a slice of real King Cake. Now, 'real' here is a relative term because it probably came from the local Costco or some equivalent, and this all happened in December, not carnival time at all, but I can't even describe how great it was. Maybe it's cheesy, but it's a special memory so when it came time to think of what I was going to do for this year's piece, I actually scrapped the idea I had been planning on since last year and went for the King Cake.

And just because life loves a good joke, I went to buy the King Cake mix I usually get this year and Cost Plus doesn't carry it any more. How's that for irony? So for the first time, I made it from scratch. We'll see if that was a good move or not once I actually taste it...
